A day in the life of a Lifecycle Oil Van Driver

Lifecycle Oil Van Driver

Morning

Typically your day will start by having a cuppa and catching up with the team. You will be given your worksheets, invoices and float from the Micro Site Manager. Using your chosen satnav app, you’ll have some quiet time whilst you input your route. Your van would have been preloaded the night before, so you are now ready to set off.

Out on the road

Whilst out on the road, depending on your route, you will see some spectacular views throughout the British country side or you might have a boring stretch of the motorway. Once you get to your customer, you will have you think about parking and find a suitable place to stop. If you are unsure, there is a group chat amongst the drivers, so you can stop close by and ask who has done a collection for this customer before, and they’ll tell you the best place to park.

You will go and greet the customer and check the barrels that need to be collected. You would make sure to ask the customer to sign for the collection. You’ll need to move the barrel to the van using a stack truck and once you get the van, you have penny lift to make things easier. Some of the bigger oil containers (fat boxes),they are built like a wheelie bin, so you will have to wheel them back to the van. These can weigh up to 100kg.  Then you will give them a clean barrel and their fresh oil, if they have ordered it. If they pay cash for the  fresh oil, you need to deduct that off what you will pay for the oil, so there is a need for a bit of basic math skills. If you are ever have a question or need support your manager or customer services are only a phone call away.

Get your paper work sign and then you’re off to your next job.

Lunch

All that driving and moving oil around is hungry work, and it is finally lunch time. If local, you can pop back to the depot to have lunch, or find a nice little spot out on your route.

Warehouse

You’ve done all your collections and it is time to head back to the depot. You unload your van using the penny lift on to a pallet. The Warehouse Manager will wrap them and using the forklift to move the pallets away.  People get back at different times, depending  on routes, customers or traffic. Those who are back later, you will normally help them unload as you work as one team.

You’ll hand over your float to your micro site manager and you will both confirm the remaining balance.

You will get your route for the next day and then preload your van for tomorrow morning.

If there is time left in the day, you might do some warehouse tasks, such as weighing oil, wrapping barrels and general house keeping.

Then it’s time to change out of your safety shoes and get on your way home.
